Top three issues in geriatric wound care

Due to the decline of physical function and weakened immunity, the elderly are more prone to various wounds. Since chronic wounds are more common in the elderly, care for chronic wounds should also pay attention to the factor of geriatric diseases, and always observe the physical adaptation of the elderly. For the wound care of the elderly, there are three major issues that require special attention.

Problem 1: Wounds heal slower in older adults. Due to factors such as the decline in physical function of the elderly, poor blood circulation, and decreased immunity, the wound healing rate of the elderly is slower.

Suggestion: The first thing to pay attention to in chronic wound care is to keep the wound dry and clean. This is very critical, especially for those elderly people who are bedridden for a long time or have limited mobility. Turn over regularly and in time to avoid ulceration after the wound is heavily pressed. Therefore, in the process of wound care, more care and patience are required to keep the wound clean and dry to avoid infection and delayed healing.

Problem 2: The skin of the elderly is fragile and vulnerable. The skin of the elderly is relatively thin and vulnerable to external stimuli and damage.

Suggestion: Therefore, in the process of wound care, it is necessary to avoid the use of irritating drugs and chemicals, so as not to aggravate the injury and pain of the wound. At the same time, silicon-containing dressings should be selected, for example, Silicone Foam Dressing has a porous structure, low surface tension, no adhesion to the wound, good air permeability, elasticity, softness, strong plasticity, lightweight, and stable physical and chemical properties. Gas exchange is beneficial to wound healing, reduces skin friction and pressure, and does not cause pain to patients when changing dressings. The operation is simple and convenient and can reduce skin friction and pressure.

Question 3: The wounds of the elderly are prone to infection. Due to the weakened immunity of the elderly, the skin is fragile and vulnerable, and they often need to stay in bed for a long time, which can easily lead to wound infection and deterioration.

Suggestion: Therefore, in the process of wound care, it is necessary to keep the wound clean and dry, and change the dressing and bandage in time to prevent the wound from being infected by bacteria and viruses. For example Silver Ion Dressing can promote wound healing, inhibit the growth of wound bacteria, and have No obvious adverse reaction.

In general, wound care for the elderly requires more care and patience. In the process of wound care, it is necessary to pay attention to the three major problems of slow wound healing, fragile skin, and easy wound infection. At the same time, soft, breathable, hygroscopic dressings and bandages should be selected and replaced in time, and attention should be paid to keeping the wound clean and dry to avoid external stimulation and infection of the wound. If there is any abnormality in the wound, seek medical treatment in time.
