Which dressing is more suitable for surgical scar care?

Many friends who have just had surgery are often worried that they will leave scars, which not only affect their appearance but may also cause a series of complications. Choosing the right dressing is critical to scar healing and appearance. This article will discuss which dressing is more suitable for surgical scar care.

Several key factors in scar care:

1. Depth of scar

Among many care methods, the depth of skin injuries is a key factor in whether they will leave scars. If only the superficial layer of the epidermis or dermis is damaged, the possibility of scar formation is minimal. When the injury reaches deeper layers of the dermis, scarring is inevitable.

The damaged area cannot be ignored. Even if the wound penetrates deep into the dermis, as long as the area is small to a certain extent, such as less than 1mm of skin layer taken during hair transplantation, which contains hair follicles and hair, it can still heal without scars.

2. Is there any infection?

The infection status of the wound plays a decisive role in the formation of scars. Even injuries to the epidermis, such as boiling water burns, usually result in blisters rather than scars. However, if improper care leads to wound infection, the inflammatory reaction caused by microorganisms will cause the damage to penetrate deep into the dermis, leading to the formation of scars and even scar hyperplasia. Therefore, post-injury care is extremely important. The wound must be kept dry and clean, and dressings must be changed regularly to avoid pus residue. At the same time, alcohol should not be used frequently to wipe the wound to avoid dehydration of the surrounding skin.

3. Wound tension

The tension of the wound site also plays an important role in the formation of scars. When the skin around joints or around the mouth is damaged, due to the activity of joint muscles, the damaged area is constantly stimulated by tension, increasing the possibility of scar hyperplasia. Therefore, for postoperative wound care, the pulling force of activities on the wound should be minimized, such as applying daily tape perpendicular to the wound (for curved parts) or using a tension reducer (for flat wound parts).

Several dressing options for scar care:

Clinically, scar treatment after trauma mainly relies on the use of Silicone Scar Dressing Tubular (mainly silicone gel ingredients) and Wound Skin Closure. The choice of which method to use depends primarily on whether there is a skin defect in the wound. If the wound has a skin defect, Wound Skin Closure is the first choice. These measures need to be continued for at least six months until the scar no longer widens and becomes red. Generally speaking, the duration of using silicone scar gel after surgery is also half a year.

Can scar gel be used at the same time as a tension reducer?

It is clinically recommended to use a combination of silicone-fitted tension reducers, but it should be noted that the tension reducer cannot be attached immediately after applying the gel, because doing so will cause the tension reducer to not fit tightly with the skin. In addition, if too much silicone gel is applied, the silicone oil may penetrate under the tape, causing the tension reducer to fail. Therefore, it is necessary to follow the advice and guidance of your doctor when using these products.

Scar care tips:

The healing process of the injured area is also affected by a variety of physical and chemical factors. Due to damage to sebaceous glands and sweat glands, the skin in the damaged area may be drier, and damage to the epidermis is more likely to leave pigmentation. Therefore, injured skin needs more moisturizing and sun protection. Without proper moisturizing and sun protection, it may lead to skin aging, pigmentation, and other problems. If the scar enters the proliferative stage and becomes harder, you can apply asiaticoside cream, which has the effect of softening the scar. These are very important care tips.
