Tattoos are beyond your imagination.

Tattoos are becoming increasingly popular among young people as a way of expressing their personal identity. However, when we see beautiful tattoos on social media, we tend to ignore their potential health risks and real costs. Statistics show that about 17%-40% of tattooed people will eventually choose to remove them, but completely restoring the skin to its original appearance is almost an impossible task. Before deciding to paint your body, these truths are worth our calm consideration.

Health risks: chain reaction from the skin to internal organs. The essence of

The tattoo process is that pigment particles into the dermis through acupuncture. This invasive operation may cause multiple hidden dangers. Studies have shown that the bacterial contamination rate of tattoo ink is as high as 20%, and the bacterial content of some pigments exceeds the safety standard by more than 10 times. The use of such pigments may cause skin redness, suppuration, and even granuloma formation. What is more worrying is that heavy metals (such as lead and mercury) and chemical additives in tattoo pigments may remain in the body for life. According to a study by The Lancet, these substances may be deposited in organs such as the brain, heart, and liver through blood circulation, and their long-term toxic effects still need further observation. Some pigments have also been confirmed to contain carcinogens. Although there is no clear dose-response relationship, the potential risks cannot be ignored.

For people with allergic constitutions, tattoos may cause persistent dermatitis, which manifests as itching, erythema, and even blisters. People with scar-prone constitutions need to be more vigilant, as tattoo trauma may induce hypertrophic scars, forming raised red nodules accompanied by stinging and itching, which are much more difficult to treat than ordinary scars. In addition, tattoos may also become a "trigger" for skin diseases, inducing isomorphic reactions such as psoriasis and vitiligo, and causing new skin lesions at the tattoo site.

Treatment dilemma: the triangular problem of time, money, and effect.

The current mainstream laser removal technology (such as Q-switched and picosecond lasers) is charged by area. Taking Beijing public hospitals as an example, the cost per square centimeter is about 175 yuan. This means that a palm-sized tattoo (about 100 square centimeters) costs 17,500 yuan for a single treatment, and complete removal usually requires 3-6 treatments, and the total cost may exceed 100,000 yuan. More realistically, lasers cannot completely remove dark pigments, and the skin often shows mottled pigment loss or residue after treatment, which is far from the expectation of recovery.

The treatment process itself is also a test for the body and mind. Even with topical anesthetics, the laser will still produce a burning sensation when it acts. Large-area tattoos require oral analgesics or even general anesthesia. Postoperative care is also complicated: antibiotic ointment must be applied for several weeks to prevent infection, strict sun protection must be applied to avoid pigmentation, and itching and scabbing may occur during the healing period. What's more, the laser may activate the dormant scar constitution, resulting in new hyperplasia at the treatment site.

From personality to burden :

Many tattooed people are caught in a dilemma after their passion fades: keeping the tattoo may affect their career choices (there are clear restrictions on positions such as soldiers, civil servants, and flight attendants), while removing it will incur high costs and cause skin damage.

Tattoos. They are a vehicle for personal aesthetics and self-expression. But before picking up a tattoo gun, we recommend three considerations: first, a comprehensive assessment of your health (especially allergies and scars); second, an estimate of your future career and life plans; and third, choosing a regular tattoo agency to check the pigment safety certification and equipment disinfection process. After all, true individuality does not need to be based on health, and rational choices are a manifestation of being responsible for yourself.
