The Ostomy Skin Barrier Threaded adheres to the skin around your stoma to help protect your skin from stoma discharge and keep the pouch close to your body.
In a two-piece system, the Ostomy Skin Barrier Threaded is separate from the ostomy bag; in a one-piece system, they are combined.
There are many options to consider when selecting the appropriate ostomy appliance for your patient, including pouch characteristics (e.g. outlet type, preference for filter, opacity, cloth backing) and adhesives. A skin barrier should be selected that provides a secure, protective seal around the stoma while maintaining optimal skin condition.
Take the skin as an example: Epithelial cells are bound by a matrix of lipids and enzymes to form an acidic protective film that protects against bacterial and fungal invasion. Metabolic processes produce sweat. The natural process of cell death causes epithelial cells to slough off. An ideal ostomy skin barrier must manage skin functions and processes without cracking or loosening, and maintain an optimal skin pH to prevent fungal or bacterial invasion. Most importantly, it must adhere firmly and be removed gently to avoid peeling the skin or causing mechanical damage. The stoma skin barrier is composed of a polymer matrix and compounds (hydrocolloids) that provide absorption (eg, sweat), tackiness (ie, properties associated with instant skin adhesion), and plasticity to conform to the skin for long-term adhesion. Ostomy adhesives are pressure sensitive. Longterm adhesion between skin and device depends on adequate contact of the adhesive with the skin surface and is achieved by applying light pressure upon application. This allows the polymer to flow into the skin, increasing the contact area.
Threaded hydrocolloid adhesive can provide additional skin protection for high excretion. The pouch is suitable for patients having ileostomy or urostomy and is safer and more protectable with a threaded design compared with an ordinary hydrocolloid skin barrier. The hydrocolloid skin barrier treated by a special process contains good initial and lasting adhesive ability and is soft, comfortable, and skin-friendly with no sensitization.
The adhesive border may help reassure and boost confidence in patients with wrinkled skin and variable topography.
